Breakthrough Marketing Technology Identifies NYC Black Entrepreneurship Culture Change

Leads to NYC Mayor de Blasio New Commitments Report and Recommendations

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced New Commitments to Further Black Entrepreneurship in New York City based on a report and recommendations by Breakthrough Marketing Technology, a MWBE business and strategic marketing consultancy in the New York/New Jersey area.

“Black entrepreneurs are an essential part of the fabric of New York City, and equity and opportunity are at the core of the work we do at SBS. These values lay the foundation for Black Entrepreneurs – BE NYC,” said Jonnel Doris, Commissioner of the Department of Small Business Services (SBS). “Working together with business, academic, government and community leaders, we are striving to create a fairer and more equitable city where Black-owned businesses can grow and thrive.”

BMT’s investigation identified the mindset shifts necessary to achieve a BE NYC equity culture.  Through data collection from more than 1500 respondents, BMT provided fact-based recommendations to create a groundbreaking model for a major American city to help create equity of opportunity by advancing Black entrepreneurship.  This requires a culture change where public, private and community partnerships address disparities together. Breakthrough’s data clearly indicates that BEs believe they can be successful, yet they feel success eludes them because of inequitable opportunities.  They identified the following categories as being barriers to their equitable success:

  • Access to capital – because big growth requires big capital
  • Opportunities for new business
  • Mentorship
  • Collaboration with partners who share a common strategy and success metrics
  • Affordable workspace

“Black-owned businesses are certainly struggling, and helping them grow is part of the broader struggle for racial justice,” said J. Phillip Thompson, Deputy Mayor for Strategic Policy Initiatives and Co-Chair of the Racial Inclusion and Equity Taskforce.

“Breakthrough Marketing Technology drew on our experience and knowledge in working on equity concerns as they relate to the African-American business community of New York City,” adds Pamela Roach, CEO, Breakthrough Marketing Technology.  “Identifying and following the roadmap to success for Black Entrepreneurship leads to generational wealth that will strengthen individuals, families, neighborhoods and our country forever.”

Organizations with strong ingredient brands shape buying criteria, strengthen competitive positioning, and become reference points for evaluating alternatives. Over time, that influence creates competitive advantages that support long-term growth and strengthen an organization’s position throughout the value chain.
